Boston’s Fourth of July Re-Visited
July, 2002

Boston's Fourth of July When Boston's Fourth of July needed a new website to promote the well-known event on the Esplanade, iCorps Technologies was on hand to deliver.

The Independence Day celebration has long been Boston’s premier event – the best known in the nation. Upwards of 500,000 attendees from all over the world come to nest on the Charles River and enjoy festivities that include boat watching, the Boston Pops, and a fireworks display that sets the bar for all other July Fourth parties. The Fourth of July celebration is Boston’s answer to New Orlean’s Mardi Gras.

This year, Boston's Fourth of July faced some new challenges. Recognizing that the World Trade Center attacks had precipitated a need for increased security, they wanted a site that would accomplish three things: disseminate information easily and quickly about new security measures; provide updates and logistical information to faithful Fourth attendees; and create an elegant look and feel that would reflect the grandeur of the event itself and give our local media something to talk about.

According to the foundation’s Event's Producer, Pam Picard, the award-winning site has accomplished all of these goals – and then some. Not only has the site made it easier to obtain the necessary information for faithful Boston fans, but also the sheer scope of the event has brought national attention to an almost 30-year-old Boston tradition, including that of the Secretary of the Navy. Picard states, ''The positive feedback we’ve been receiving for this celebration is unprecedented. This is largely due to the allure of the new site that iCorps built for us, which gives visitors an authentic glimpse into the Boston Fourth of July experience.''

When iCorps’ web consultants reviewed the history of the July Fourth event, immediate images came to mind - patriotism and historical elegance being predominant. iCorps’ goal was to build a site that would convey Boston’s heritage, but also communicate the warmth and patriotic pride that comes with celebrating our nation’s birthday in one of America’s first cities. The dramatic colors were drawn directly from the foundation’s own color palette as well as the American flag. The homepage with its imagery of children and family helps to create a feeling of nostalgia for a not- so- bygone era of innocence. Above all, the site is rich with content that is easily accessible and it convincingly captures the historical significance of Independence Day, Boston culture, and American patriotism in one full, genuine, sweep.

iCorps is proud to pay homage to our Boston roots on our Nation’s birthday by partnering with our community. For more information on Boston’s Fourth of July, please visit www.july4th.org.
